STOP TAX ON BETTING AND LOTTERY

JOHN DUMELO

Actor and politician, John Dumelo is not happy that the government has introduced a tax on betting and lottery and has described the move as an iron "fist style" of leadership by the New Patriotic Party government.

In a tweet on Thursday (April 6), Dumelo condemned the three tax laws that were passed by parliament last week and said it could incur the wrath of the youth.

Parliament passes 3 revenue bills

It includes a 10% withholding tax at the point of payout for betting, lottery and game of chance winnings.

The actor said it was quite unfortunate the government wants to burden citizens with taxes other than creating jobs.

“Create jobs, you won’t create. The youth have created their own jobs too ahhh, you want to tax their winnings…..continue. That day will come when the youth will rise against you. It will be too late,” he stated.

Betting, lottery and game of chance winnings will become subject to a 10% withholding tax at the point of payout when President Akufo-Addo assents and gazette's the new tax bills passed by Parliament recently. Betting companies will also have a 20% tax on all revenue.

The betting industry has experienced tremendous growth in Ghana over the past decade, with several companies setting up shops in the country.

However, there have been mixed reactions with critics citing addictions as a disapproval for the scheme.

In other matters, the chances of John Dumelo who announced his parliamentary bid on the ticket of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in February is in limbo following the decision of the Greater Accra Regional Vetting Committee to put his and Fred Nuamah’s vetting on hold until further notice.
