| Akosua Agyapong denies defraudment allegations |
Ghanaian musician Akosua Adjepong has refuted claims that she defrauded a businessman of GH₵105,000. She asserted that she did not conduct any business transaction with the said individual and, therefore, could not have received money from him.
Akosua Adjepong appeared in the Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday, accused of conspiring with her cousin, Frank Agyemang (also known as Killer Boss), to deceive a businessman in a land sale.
According to prosecutors, Akosua and Agyemang sold a parcel of land worth GH₵160,000, which they did not own, to the businessman. They have both been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and fraudulent transaction.
Case Overview:
ASP Ms. Agnes Boafo, the prosecutor, stated that the complainant, a car dealer, contacted Akosua in February 2017, expressing his interest in purchasing a plot of land by the roadside to sell his cars. Akosua introduced Agyemang to the businessman, presenting him as her brother, who had a plot of land opposite the West Hills Mall for sale. After inspecting the land, the businessman showed interest.
The prosecutor explained that Akosua and Agyemang took the businessman to the Lands Commission, where an individual confirmed that the land belonged to Agyemang. Convinced, the businessman made several payments totaling GH₵105,000 for the land and later added a Toyota RAV4 valued at GH₵100,000 to Agyemang. Agyemang agreed to reimburse the businessman with GH₵40,000, which he intended to settle with another plot of land.
However, when the businessman began working on the land, another person claimed ownership with original documents. The businessman reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest of Akosua and Agyemang. Agyemang handed over the vehicle to the police.
During the court hearing, Agyemang pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the amount of GH₵160,000 with three sureties, one of which had to be justified. Akosua Adjepong was not present in court.
Response
In response to the case, Akosua Adjepong denied having any dealings with the businessman. In an interview with JoyNews' Maxwell Amoofia, she explained that she had a plot of land but was not selling it. Instead, she introduced her cousin, who had a plot of land opposite the West Hills Mall. Together, they met her cousin and verified the ownership of the land at the Lands Commission.
Akosua witnessed the first payment of GH₵65,000 before traveling. She mentioned that the businessman made additional payments of GH₵30,000 and GH₵10,000 in her absence, leaving a balance of GH₵60,000. The businessman offered a Toyota RAV4 valued at GH₵100,000 to Agyemang, who then owed the businessman GH₵40,000. Agyemang offered another plot of land to offset the GH₵40,000.
Later, the businessman reported that another individual claimed ownership of the land. He informed the police that he no longer wanted the land. Akosua revealed that her cousin returned the RAV4 to the businessman and was in the process of refunding the GH₵105,000. She maintained that her cousin genuinely owned the land and did not intend to defraud the businessman.
The hearing will continue on October 24, 2017.
